I've thought of a few questions you might need answered.
Who are you? I'm Dr. Rolonda Qualls, Doctor of Pharmacy. I have over 15 years of experience in community pharmacy. I grew frustrated with the fact that I couldn't have a discussion with patients regarding medications. Corporate policy was more focused on how many scripts I reviewed and filled along with how many vaccinations I gave.
What makes you an expert on medications? As a Doctor of Pharmacy, I have completed a 4-year program with an emphasis on direct patient care and the safe and effective use of drugs. Life experience counts as well! I have friends and family members with different health issues, so I bring that knowledge as well.
Do you still work in retail pharmacy? No, I do not. I felt that patients were being prescribed too many medications, when the real focus should had been on living a healthier lifestyle.
Are you still a pharmacist? Absolutely. I now provide consulting and health coaching services to help support wellness, not illness.
What is PGx? Pharmacogenomics or PGx is a big word to describe how a person's genes can tell us how they might respond to different medicines. A small sample from a cheek swab, done in the privacy of your home, is used to get the sample. The results help us choose the best medicine for each person based on their genes. This helps make sure the medication works and helps avoid bad side effects. We call this PRECISION MEDICINE.
Why do I need you? I'm a wellness consultant. That means I can help you understand the medications you are currently taking along with the health issues you have. I use PGx data and work with your doctor to make sure you are on the most appropriate medications. I also can help you navigate healthcare by working with you and your physicians to reach your wellness goals.
